Photography Holiday Cards

Since its development in the early 19th century, photography has captivated mankind in a way few other art forms can. Though the early process was tedious and time consuming, largely why most people didn’t smile in early portraits, today photography can be as easy as the click of a phone and within seconds that photo can be uploaded to social media sites and shared around the globe. Though social media has only been around for about a generation, this concept was still part of the appeal of photography from its earliest times. Allowing people to see people and places and historic events they might otherwise never be able to experience, photography allowed even the common man to see the wonders of the world.

Thanks to technology making photography faster, simpler and less expensive, today photography is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the world. In fact, according to statistics from 2010, we now take as many photographs every two minutes as did the entirety of humanity during the 1800s. And they’re not all selfies and food, though the fact that selfie has now been added to Merriam Webster is yet another indication of our obsession with photographs. Perhaps their appeal was best described by French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, known as the father pf photojournalism, who explained his obsession with street photography by saying “I suddenly understood that a photograph could fix eternity in an instant.”
